Gary Tanguay calls Smart the possible leader of the Celtics, and not Rondo

Not a big shocker coming from Gary Tanguay. He's hated Rondo for awhile now, and he's wanted a Rondo trade for years now. Gary Tanguay feels something in the air, or at least that's his hope from the Celtics drafting Smart. Smart has been doing everything right so far, and it's a matter of time before we see more fans jumping on this ship..

CSNNE

Duncan has been a team player his entire career. Whenever Pop got on his butt, this superstar didn’t pout, call his agent, or get his coach fired. He got back on the floor and tried harder. That is a coach’s best asset: a superstar who accepts guidance.

Torre’s messenger was Derek Jeter, who 10 years ago tonight made the catch the sent Nomar packing. Was there ever going to be another Joe D or Mickey Mantle, we wondered? Yep: Jeter. It's hard to argue he hasn't been the perfect winner. The guy is so polite he'd send his overnight guests home with a flippin’ gift basket!

Why am I babbling about this?

Because Brad Stevens may have found his messenger in Marcus Smart.

KG, Paul and Ray carried the word for Doc. Marcus may do the same for Brad.

Celtic assistant Jay Larranaga told reporters today after a summer workout that Smart brought great energy to the floor. This is a guy who loves to play both ends of the floor and is what this team needs: a leader who sets the tone. Based on what we have seen and heard about Smart, he could be that guy. I hope he is, for Brad’s sake. Because there's no one else on this roster who could be . . . and that includes Rajon Rondo.

  1. As I said, things are getting very ugly fast. Of course Tanguay would set the tone, with a big assist from Larranaga. But most of the journos, the blogs and fans as well, have been primed to jump on Rondo for a long time. Rondo is his own man. They can't stand that. Most people are drones and they can't stand folks who are not. But lovely Brad, he turned out to be a mealy mouthed piece of work, didn't he? Drafting Smart was a frontal assault on Rondo. The team used the draft pick they had tanked hard for (and Rondo helped them tank) on someone to take Rondo's spot. Then, to make sure Rondo got the message, they went after IT hard on free agent day. That was certainly salt rubbed into a gaping wound.

  3. I don't hate smart, but it seems clear that the fans are gaga. Rondo earned the leadership role and this is his reward.

    1. Rondo is the man ask Brad. Let us not forget Smart had issues this past year. People had nothing good to say about him, that's he feel in the draft. Give it time the haters will hate him too.

  4. Thak goodness, the fans are not runnig this team. Rondo is the team leader of the Celtics. Smart may be the leader some where down the line, but right now he is the new kid on the block with lots of energy and I am sure that he will follow Rondo's leadership. He will work hard and do his best to prove himself to be a true CELTIC. I don't see him trying to outdo Rondo, but to learn from him and to be a team mate that Rondo will respect.

  5. everything we hear about Smart says that he is someone who sees himself as alpha, not as follower.

  6. Now let me see if I follow the theory - the Cs aren't looking at pgs like Smart and Thomas because they are looking to get rid of Rondo. No they are looking to overload with pgs this year the same way they overloaded with pfs last year. It's just a different way of tanking?

  7. No one fussed when Pressley was added to the team. The Celtics are replacing him with Smart PERIOD! When these blabber mouths come up with negativity do they for one minute care if Ronda has any feelings. I hope he leaves so he doesn't have to listen to the idiots that are incapable of understanding rondo's potential.

  9. Rondo is the team leader and he put the team on his back when the Big 3 began to fall-apart. It was unfortunate Perkins tore-up his knee in the Finals, wasn't protected, and then subsequently got shipped to OKC at the trade deadline for a bunch of Garbage. However, Rondo is not worth $100 Million over 5 years to THIS Celtics Team, at this stage of retooling. Maybe if that deal got done the same Summer Pierce & KG got moved it would be different. The fact is teams no longer build through overpaid free agency - they use the Draft. Rondo might get paid somewhere else that has the Cap space and another Star. The Smart pick was a message to Rondo.

  10. I don't think Rondo will go max, here or elsewhere. I think he wants strong teammates to play with.

  11. Rondo is gone ! To be a leader you need to get along with and be respected by your team mates. Rondo can't get along and is difficult to deal with and still can't shoot for SHIT.

  12. Thanks for putting in your two cents, Ray Ray. I do think that Rondo needs to improve his shooting, and I admit that Rondo fans like me have been saying for years that he was on the verge of improving his shooting yet he never has.
